24th July- Chloe Noonan: Monster Hunters (#2-4)
This is a first! I’m reviewing something that doesn’t even have a wikipedia page yet!
I bought these comics for less than three pound each (although you can get a digital omnibus online for less than that) honestly I only bought them because 1) it was cheaper than forking out for another DC graphic novel 2) there’s a heroine who has thick-rimmed glasses and wears checkered shirts instead of busty corsets and 3) super clean and cool art design not dissimilar to Brian O’Malley or Faith Erin Hicks’ work (which I love).
Chloe Noonan: Monster Hunster didn’t disappoint in that regard, its really very funny with cynical and unwilling heroine Noonan paired up with her two enthusiastic and dumb-witted but well meaning friends Doug and Zoe to fight less than threatening ‘monsters’ from an alcoholic crab…thing (?) called Skaldjur to a totally disinterested Kraken (summoned accidentally by chloe’s bandmate Zach during a gig).
So far, only four issues have been released and I don’t think we’ll get to read much more than that. It’s a shame because it is evident that Marc Ellerby had plans for a truly fascinating story arch between Chloe and an unnamed green skinned monster that asked Chloe to question if she even knew why she was hunting him or if she even wanted to. A cool existential crisis for Ellery’s otherwise nonchalant heroine? Maybe a nemesis or even a love-interest?
Needless to say, I am devastated there is not more to read and I hope that this won’t be the last I see of Nooners.
