10th May - Saving Private Ryan

There’s not much I can say about Saving Private Ryan that hasn’t already been said. It’s an epic war film. Depicting both the horrors of war and the heroics of everyday men flung into battle. Its masterful. From its grim yet beautiful cinematography to its uplifting and epic musical composition. Its cast perform together outstandingly. It essentially perfect.

On paper that is, but personally I thought that Saving Private Ryan boasted a little too much bravado concerning its characters. Whilst there is effort to humanize their German enemies and comment upon its American soldiers questionable morality. Saving Private Ryan still felt too patriotic and undermined its supposedly anti-war message by implying its American’s platoon of righteousness constantly. Despite moments of uncertainty (for example when a Jewish-American soldier cries over a young German soldiers body) its emphasized time and time again that to save one man -to save Private Ryan- somehow justifies their sacrifice and their enemies bloodshed.

Perhaps I should have expected as much from a war film brought to us by the United States of America, where to question war is considered unpatriotic and grossly unsympathetic of soldiers who have fought and died in battle for a greater cause. I do not doubt that soldiers, especially during World War II, sacrificed themselves to protect democracy. But was it always just? Saving Private Ryan cannot seem to discuss let alone tackle such a question. Constantly redeeming its characters of whatever wrongs committed. It even defends those in charge, those who sit safely behind desks and send thousands of young men to their inevitable death, by making their demands -to save Private Ryan, the only surviving soldier of a family of four brothers loved by an elderly widow- admirable rather than questionable or even insane.

It’s a great film, no doubt. It was thrillingly tense and emotionally absorbing. But I can’t but help feel that it was just another Hollywood blockbuster rather than a film. It’s bravado, disguised by its famed initial action sequence. Its unbearably long yet fantastically shot beach scene with its mindless gore and endless, nameless deaths that felt deceivingly empty -deceivingly anti-war- was unlike any other action sequence thereafter of which felt justified and even seemed heroic. Perhaps I am missing a point? After all Saving Private Ryan was not about ending or even fighting World War II as much as it was about questioning the importance of one man’s life. But that discussion felt lost in between morbidly exciting action scenes, beautifully grim cinematography, lightening fast editing and an uplifting composition.

Maybe Saving Private Ryan was too beautiful for its own good…All in all, it’s a cinematic feat that’s worthy of all its decoration and definitely a modern war-epic that begs to be seen. But do not, as I did, expect an “All Quiet on the Western Front” because as you watch it you might feel, as I did, disappointed, manipulated and conflicted.

The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.

Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.

This just… hurts.

14th May - Love is a Mixtape

If I hadn’t been so afraid of having yet another review to write in April (which is when I ready 4/5ths of this novel) then I’d be able to say this was a real page-turner. I’ve always loved memoirs and Rob Sheffield’s bitter sweet account of his first loves; music and his late wife, Renee. Sheffield writes effortlessly, it’s a light-read that touches upon heavy thoughts and feelings from the effect of Kurt Cobain’s suicide on music to Sheffield’s overwhelming grief at his young wife’s death. It is obvious Sheffield is a music journalist -not just because of his vast and eclectic knowledge and tastes that is evident on every page- but because Sheffield can comfortably translate that somewhat indescribable feeling that lyrics and melodies give you into words. This isn’t a story, so much as it is a mixtape in itself. Every chapter begins with a tracklist from an actual mixtape made by or for Sheffield. You’d be hard pressed to read five lines without a reference to seminal artists like Pavement or David Bowie or other ‘obscure’ artists (no doubt someone’s heard of them all…) It’s a little heart warming book, both witty and poignant that shouldn’t be passed up by anyone especially music fans. For anyone that’s made a mixtape, mix-cd, or playlist.

10th May - That Mitchell and Webb Look (season one)

I’ve lost my glasses and I can’t look at the screen very long without getting a headache cause everything looks fuzzy so I’ll keep this brief.

That Mitchell and Webb Look is incredibly entertaining, classically British and addictive. Its silly just as silly as Morecambe and Wise, as tongue-in-cheek as A Bit of Hugh and Laurie and as quotable as Monty Python.

David Mitchell and Robert Webb famous for their awkward, absurd and obscene comedy sitcom The Peep Show comfortably transition to sketch comedy. It’s simply wonderfully cheap and cheery, light and airy -Which despite being a massive change from Mitchell and Webb’s arguably black comedy sitcom, Peep Show, is almost certainly a welcome one-. An absolute must-see!
